Offically, DXVA 2.0 is required for h.264, and that is only available under Vista with the EVR renderer.

I think Cyberlink and the ATI/Nvidia had got together to find a way around this on XP for PowerDVD etc using some proprietary mechanism, but I dont know if that magic can become automatically available to apps doing H.264 stuff on Vista with the Cyberlink H.264 decoder.

Yeah, when I playback a DVB-T TVNZ recording through PowerDVD, the PowerDVD configuration screen shows DVXA "not in use". So it looks like (sigh...argh) upgrading to Vista? I just hope that when I do, it'll be worth it (i.e not find another instance of "oh yes the 8500GT supports h.264 acceleration but what you REALLY need to get it to work is blah, blah, blah).
Regards,
Hasso

Wasn't a dig at you, but rather the card manufacturers who make all these claims but are rather hesitent in detailing the "fine print".

8600GTS H.264 acceleration works using the Cyberlink decoder. CPU utilisation is <10% when playing back the NZ DTT trials.
Cheers

Ah... a glimmer of hope! If it works for the 8600GTS, it should work for the 8500GT. Can you give any insight on how you accomplished this? Version of nVidia drivers, PowerDVD? Any specific settings?

Hasso

SUCCESS!! Applying the 3730 patch to PowerDVD Ultra 7.3 has now cut the CPU utilisation to about 20-25% when playing back the DVB-T trials. Probably about right given I've only got the 4400 CPU. Thanks.

Hasso
