I've been following this thread closely, as I cancelled a Popcorn Hour order when this board came out, thinking that it might be a better solution for my application. It's disappointing to see so many issues, but if it does work without HA, then maybe CPU power is the expedient solution, especially for Vista holdouts. When Gazoo gets it sorted, I'll jump. Wink

Hopefully this month. As I said, you pay about $50 to get a 4000+ or above CPU and you could do it all on software decode just as I have. I also have the option of overclocking up to 15% with the click of a menu option in the Asus board bios config. That's if you run into the next gen decoder that may need more juice.

Just to let everyone (and especially gazoo) know that the latest (public!) 8.6 Catalyst drivers have enabled DXVA on the 780G chipset under Windows XP!

Using PowerDVD to watch a 1920x1080i MPEG2 DVR-MS file gives CPU utilization rates of about 10% combined on an Athlon 64 X2 5200+

I'm still not having any luck getting DXVA to work under PVRX2. So far my best results are with EVR and with the PowerDVD 6 codec with the Hardware acceleration disabled. Combined CPU usage is around 40% - still pretty high but at least it's watchable. If I try to enable hardware acceleration, the CPU usage doesn't go down, but I start to get tearing...

If anyone knows how to get DXVA working properly under PVRX2 for MPEG2 video on the 780G motherboard, I'd love to hear from you!!!

I'm still on my trip but I would recommend you try the MPC codecs in addition to cyberlink. Cyberlink disables DXVA (I believe) every instance, and every instance you must re-enable it. You aren't able to re-enable it in PVRX2 without some hacking or regedit. I haven't had success with the regedit so I moved on to trying some other codecs. Try the MPC and let me know how it goes. My recommendation would be to try to get windows to pick MPC by default and make pvrx2 config go for "system default" for video codec. That is IF you get it working outside with DXVA.

Can you give me a link to that codec please?

A google search brought up a heap of things, but nothing that looked like an MPEG2 codec - most results were for either the Musepack codec - which seems to be audio only, or Media Player Classic, which appears to only use internal codecs - rather than providing a codec that other programs can use...

Here is what your looking for, you only need to download the mpchc_x86_v1.1.0.0_MPCVideoDec.zip
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles..._id=582299

You will need to register it though the command line with regsvr32, alternatively you can make a reg file with these keys in it and the add it to the registry. that will allow you to register and unregister ax files by using the right click contect menu

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ax]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ax\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ax\Shell\Register]
@="AX Register"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ax\Shell\Register\Command]
@="rundll32.exe \"%1\",DllRegisterServer"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ax\Shell\Unregister]
@="AX Unregister"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ax\Shell\Unregister\Command]
@="rundll32.exe \"%1\",DllUnregisterServer"

thanks bogyver.

I usually run regsvr32. It's described in the wiki. Also, I change filter priorities with GSpot. I initially check everything out with graphedit.

Thanks for that.

I've downloaded and registered it, but I don't see any way to enable DXVA with it - is it supposed to be automatically enabled?

Using the codec in Media Player Classic, I'm actually getting higher CPU usage than with the Cyberlink codec with DXVA disabled...

I've tried playing with DXVA Checker, but for some reason, it's stuffing up something with my system - presumably the video driver. Just simply opening DXVA Checker and then closing it without loading any video files, then launching PowerDVD 6 results in a black screen and then a complete system lock up!

I posted this in the support forum before someone kindly pointed me in the direction of this thread that I've somehow managed to miss! While I dont seem to be having the same SD HW accel issues (using Vista and EVR) my HD playback is a nightmare. Here's my earlier post, any help gratefully received:

I'm wondering if anyone else here has the above motherboard with built in HD3200 graphics and has any issues with H.264 HD channels? I'm struggling to get stutter free playback on the BBC and ITV HD channels (DVB-S) using one of these with a 45w dual core 2.5Ghz AMD CPU. It's running on Vista Ultimate in 720p using EVR on GBPVR 1.2.13 - did the same on 1.2.9. HD will play back fine for a few mins, then stutter sometimes for a few seconds only, sometimes until I get annoyed. Changing the channel over and back often solves the problem for another few mins as can restarting PVRX2 - but equally sometimes it makes no difference. SD channels play fine - the news tickers are silky smooth at 720p. I've never got 1080i25 to work well (awful deinterlacing on the new tickers and worse HD stutter) and 1080p60 is even worse. 1080p50 is never offered and I've never sussed out how to get it to happen.

I installed the latest ATI 8.6 driver yesterday which made the interlacing on HD much worse. I've previously had perfect BBC HD playback using an inferier system (celeron 2.5Ghz, APG HD2600XT) but that was with 7.12 ATI drivers so maybe I should try them... I'm using the Cyberlink decoder, I've tried the version I got with the LG Blu-ray drive and the full retail 7.3 version and get the same results with both.

Just wondering if anyone has a similar setup and what combination of ATI drivers and video codec work best with HD playback. If you have any advice for 1080i or p50 I'd also be grateful!!
