I installed the hali splitter thing mentioned in another post and got mp4 playback perfectly. Unfortunately it broke everything else (I think it was trying to get involved with mpeg and avi decoding too) and I was unable to watch any recorded shows until I uninstalled it. I remember that on installation it had loads of tick boxes as to what it will attempt to decode (although I couldn't find the equivalent options in it's setting page after installation) so what are the minimum ticks I need to set in order to get mp4 playback with hali, but leave all other formats handled as they were before?

Alternatively are there any other codecs / splitters / whatevers out there that I could use instead that would be a bit easier for me to get working?

I can remember what the tick box options are. Can you post a screenshot?

sounds like ffdshow, look in it's video decoder props for codecs section, and set to 'disabled' any you want other codecs to handle..
[probably mpeg2,wmv]
gabest has the mp4 splitter, and decoders and they work rather well...you probably just need the splitter..http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles...p_id=82303
it only does mp4 i believe so shouldn't mess with any other file types..

registering mp4splitter seems to have done the job. thanks for the advice.
On a related note I noticed a matroska splitter on the same download page that I thought might get .mkv files playing in gbpvr, but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas why this might be?

I remember having that problem too, .mkv files worked after I installed the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack).

CCCP Start Menu Group, All Options Installed
CCCP Start Menu Group, All Options Installed

The current playback pack will install:

* Haali Media Splitter

My main worry with codec packs is that they will take over my carefully crafted machine and start being used where there not wanted. This is what happened with my haali attempt - and it looks like this is the first thing the cccp installs on my machine.
I think i'll take the safe route on this one and use vlc for mkv. It's not a format I see or use often.

I use the Haali Media Splitter for mkv playback. It works well here.

Of cource there is a risk for that if you have very special codecs that you are dependent of. I used to use the "GordianKnot" codec package and was very anxious that cccp would ruin my whole setup. But it prooved to work better than the GordianKnot package :o
