hello- please can you advise?
The broadcasted version of 24 had closed captioning.
I captured and it played fine, just no closed captionining in GBPVR.
I fired it off to my popcorn hour and ... no closed captioning.
Can someone explain what i need to do to get closed captioning w/ATSC without making a SD DVD or something?

thanks!

Sorry, there is no built in support ATSC closed captions in GB-PVR.

I can only offer the same suggestions I did on the NMT forum

1. Use a composite monitor, the 1080i broadcast will be down converted to 480i widescreen DVD, but depending on the cc functions in you monitor you could get the captioning. I get it via ATSC even in livetv

2. Use CCExtractor to create an srt file with the closed captioning. This way you get cc's handled as subtitles by the PCH and you get HD but you lose some of the features of cc1 format ie screen positioning of text.

True, but it doesn't mean you cannot have them.
There is an entry in the wiki about CC: http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/General#toc14

My preferred method is this: open config.exe;
Go to: Misc tab: Toggle on “Show closed captions (Intervideo/VMR7/ VMR9)”.
Go to: Playback tab: Choose: PVRX2 renderer: VMR9, VMR7 might also be an option.

Close config.exe.

-If you want to see CC in recordings in *.mpg format, choose NVIDIA video decoder (PVRX2->settings->Playback->Video Decoder.)
-If you want to see CC in recordings in *.dvr-ms format, choose ATI video decoder.

You may not have these codecs installed on your computer, search for them on the net.

I don't know anything about popcorn hour. For that, you may have to learn about srt viewer.

I've had OK results with CCExtractor (http://ccextractor.sourceforge.net/). I run it in PostProcessing.bat. It creates a .srt file. You need to enable the SRT viewer on the Misc tab in config, and then press Ctrl-Y during playback to toggle the SRT viewer on.

CCExtractor also comes with a GUI tool that you can drag and drop files on, so you can try that with your existing recording.

hey Martin - Do you mean using the RYG outputs instead of HDMI? Tried that, no captionsSad

somewhat out of my depth here :o so if I create an .srt file of the captions, how does PCH add this to the HDMI output? How does this associate itself with my original .ts file? I don't care about the luxury features, raw on-screen text is good enough Big Grin

For me it doesn't work on component video (RGB output), it only works on 480i SD composite (Y output).

The PCH reads the SRT file and overlays the text with on screen graphic on any format supported by the PCH. You use the Subtitle key on the remote to turn it on or off.

so... do I put my video file (.ts) with .srt file in the same folder... and PCH will figure it out if i hit the Subtitle key on the remote? sounds too easy Wink

Yes it is that simple. If you setup the PCH to show subtitles by default you don't even need to hit the subtitle key.

nice ... thanks. I will try this weekend. You think it might work over my HDMI @ 1080i? Cool
