Yep, you can. Turn hook driver (mirror driver) off. But I have to reduce to 256 colours to get the speed up, or make the window pretty small.

I started to use ultra vnc when xp remote desktop froze my computer, and i am much happier, especially since you can load pvrx2

Yeah I've only just got my VNC working again, after upgrading to 1920x1080 video card it started to crash, but have got on to the nvidia 182 (or 188) drivers and seems to be stable now.

I have been using remote desktop for my winxp HTPC for a long time. Here IMO is the best patch.
Be aware their are some quirky user permission issues with apps on the HTPC host if you use a second account:
