I scheduled to record Invasion this week and when I went to watch it GBPVR hung up. I had to kill it. I then tried to view it from Windows Media Player and it also hung up. The file size looks correct. I have a PVR150 and DirectTV STB. Is there anything I can try to fix this recording? Has anyone else had this happen? Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Thanks,
Brian

Try running it through Pvastrumento (http://www.offeryn.de/dv.htm) if its a mpeg2 file.

herbs,

Thanks for the response. I downloaded the software and when I try to open the mpeg Pvastrumento hangs. I tried opening another recording also that I knew was good and Pvastrumento hangs also. The file size is around 2GB. Have you ever opened a file that large with Pvastrumento?

I've run into that if the recording's "I" frames aren't correct - the timing information and headers are missing. Running problem recordings through ffmpeg to reencode has solved the problem for me.

I use GUI4ffmpeg (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=gui4ffmpeg), a simple front-end for ffmpeg (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=ffmpeg). I have ffmpeg installed in the same directory as GUI4ffmpeg. My experience with it is about 35-40 minutes per GB reencoded - much faster than TMPEG Enc 3 (AMD 2600+ 768MB RAM). TMPEG Enc has a tendency to crash without the "I" frame information - ffmpeg hasn't had any issues with problem recordings. It's also nice if you want to reencode audio to AC3 or mpeg2 to avi. There's no need to demux before or after encoding (unless you're going to edit in Cuttermaran or a similar tool). Be advised, though: TMPEG 2.5 doesn't play nice with files reencoded with ffmpeg. Ffmpeg is very strict with its GOP structures; TMPEG plays a little more fast & loose.
