I'm hoping someone can help me out. I have a GBPVR box sitting in my AV cabinet (No Keyboard or mouse attached). I use the S-Vid out of my video card (So I can play various file types). When I want to install something or do something to my PVR, I remote desktop into it. This causes the display to my TV to "lock" and the only way I've found to restore it, is to bounce the box. Else I would have to have a keyboard attached to the PVR and type in the users password.

Anyone have a better way to do this?

thanks.

I was having the same problem a month or so ago, but managed to find this workaround:

http://sig9.com/articles/concurrent-remote-desktop

it allows concurrent user sessions in XP with remote desktop. The way i use it is to have GBPVR on one user account with a custom task on the menu to kill and restart GBPVR.exe, and access the PVR by logging into another user account. Then you can load config.exe and make changes and restart the recording service from the remote session while still watching fullscreen TV on your TV. to see the changes all you have to do is fire off the custom task in an ad break or whatever, much more agreeable to WAF than a full restartWink

Its *much* faster than VNC, im using 11b wireless to access the box and theres no lag, its almost like im logged in locally at the machine. also your remotly-logged user adopts the resolution of the monitor you are using rather than squishing the resolution of the widescreen TV into the screen you're working on.

Works perfectly for meBig Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Thats what that fix detailed in the link gets rid of...

The problem i had with ultravnc was that i has to wait until the TV watchers wernt using TV before i could do anything because they would see what i was doing on the TV. Not as bad as getting logged out by 'standard' RD but still not workable if the PVRs in use most of the time.

That fix i link to gets round both problems. once applied, it neither shows the TV viewers what your doing (like VNC), nor does it lock you out locally like 'standard' RD does...

unless ive missed something with vnc, you cant login to user account 'a' while someone is logged in locally on user account 'b' without the local user seeing your actions on screen.

Vnc attaches to your display and I don't think in windows you can create seperate displays, like with *nix. Thats the advantage RDP gives you.

Same as Tipstir, after trying various solutions I now use UltraVNC with a 128-bit encryption key and it works flawlessly. I can access either through a browser or (my preferred method) I carry the client and key around on a USB drive. Job done.

Ricklous: I love this idea, i hate having to wait till g/f finishes using the tellybox to tinker with stuff so i'll give this a bash.

The only problem i see is that i use the Administrator user profile with no users added (possibly foolish for some reason im not aware of?) with a reg change to allow autologin.

If i then create two user accounts (transfer everything from admin to user a) how do i get windows to automatically boot into user a without keyboard/mouse input or without using RD?

i used tweak ui to force the box to auto login to the GBPVR account, and have both accounts set up with administrator rights. Dont think i transfered anything over, i just created a new account after following the procedure on that webpage.

The only caveat is that you have to have 'fast user switching' enabled which means you see the XP 'welcome' screen flash up so its harder to hide windows completly. but thats all really. worth it for the time and WAF you save!
