Gradient when playing DVD

Does anybody know why this gradient is on the screen during dvd playback and how to get rid of it? I'm using intervideo decoders

I used to get that also when I used automatic aspect-ratio detection and the screen was not 4:3. Switching back to the manually-set aspect ratios took care of it. (I would really have liked to stick with the auto aspect-ratio detection *and* not had the gradient) I use intervideo too.
