Wow, this post has been up for 2 days and not a single reply. I guess I'll have to send it directly to sub. I have DVD's ripped to my hard drive in VOB format (has the VIDEO_TS folder structure), configured a directory for PVRX2, I can see the filename.dvd for the target video in the PVRX2 menu, but when I attempt to play it PVRX2 hangs and the image never displays. What am I doing wrong?

from PM Wrote:Nobody has responded to my post concerning this issue. I have DVD's ripped to my hard drive in VOB format (has the VIDEO_TS folder structure) in preparation for burning them to a blank disk, configured a directory for PVRX2 (is specified as a file location in my Library settings), I can see the filename.dvd for the target video in the PVRX2 menu, but when I attempt to play it PVRX2 the image never displays (just a black screen), and PVRX2 locks and has to be killed to regain control of the system. I CAN briefly display the playback status, which shows a green bar representing the file's total length, and a position arrow at the beginning. CTRL-P won't start it. I looked at some other posts that seemed close, but not quite the same issue concerning LCD's, plugins, and VFD. What am I doing wrong?

And for that matter, I can't play back a DVD from my PC's DVD drive either. Selecting DVD will open/close the drive tray, but the files aren't recognized or for whatever reason won't begin playing. I downloaded Daemon Tools, but I'm not sure if I need that and am supposed to use it or not - or how to properly configure it using its native config to work with PVRX2 OR in the GBPVR setup. I tried setting up a single device on a single virtual drive in Daemon, not mounting anything specific, and using that virtual drive letter in the GBPVR config for ISO playback. Daemon only seems to support VCD's and formats other than a DVD's native VOB files. Do I need to convert my DVD's to something other than VOB before GBPVR/PVRX2 will play them?

I have made another post concerning GVPVR/PVRX2 apparently locking my DVD drive where you didn't think it could be the cause, but don't you think that if the program can open the drive tray when it's running that it probably can also lock the drive to prevent another app from using it to rip/burn a DVD? I'm using RipIt4Me as a front end to DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, burning using CopyToDVD.
Please dont send PM's directly to me to ask support questions like this - just post the question on the forums. If no one replies, it probably means no one has any ideas or suggestions. I know that can be frustrating, but occasionally people just dont have answers.

This is really your problem, rather than not being able to play it from a directory.

It's most likely due to the combination of directshow decoders you're trying to use for DVD playback.

You dont need Daemon Tools when playing back DVD's ripped to a directory (VIDEO_TS and .VOBs etc). Its only required when playing DVD .iso files.

Sorry for not following proper protocol - I'm still relatively new to this forum (and GBPRV). I had asked before about the prob playing VOB files, and you asked for logs. I've zipped them up and attached them to this message.

I'll remove DAEMON Tools and references to it in the GBPRV config.

I would prefer to playback movies from hard disk file as opposed to DVD disk, but since I couldn't get it to work I thought I'd try direct disk playback - it might come in handy for watching movies on TV's that don't have DVD players. I can otherwise play disks on my PC using other programs, it's just GBPVR/PVRX2 that won't display them. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the combination of directshow decoders I'm using. I didn't know that anything was running in combination - how do I check or change this? Does GBPVR use a different decoder than what (for example) DVD Shrink uses in preview mode? Where do you select the decoder for DVD playback in GBPVR/PVRX2?

I'm talking about the DVD decoder settings on the DVD tab of the config app. Done leave these set to 'system default'.

I wondered about that, but it's a drop-down box that only has system default as an option. Can I or am I supposed to manually overwrite that field with something? How do I know the exact text for the decoder to use, and that GBPVR/PVRX2 will find and use it properly? Was GBPVR supposed to detect and list several decoders that it found on my system? How do I make GBPVR find and list all the decoders I have available?

This typically means it cant find any decoders on the machine that are known to work for DVD playback.

For example, if you install the Cyberlink PowerDVD software then it'll list the Cyberlink decoders as options.

I'm running v1.0.16, and I have Dell's version of CyberLink DVD on my PC. I went into GBPVR config, and the only selection available for DVD playback is still system default. I can run CyberLink DVD and it plays the DVD in the drive. I'm going to try re-installing CyberLink for the particular WinXP (SP2) user that I've got GBPVR running under. I'll then try to re-install GBPVR as well. I also have install CD's for Sonic MyDVD Plus, and InterVideo WinDVD. Are any of these better than the others or preferred?

This is most likely because the Dell version of the Cyberlink software uses some custom decoder names that I've not come across (ie, not the normal Cyberlink PowerDVD names). Intervideo WinDVD should also be fine, but I can only guess that is also some weird OEM install that doesnt have the standard filternames.

Download graphedit and check the filternames. The Sonic/Intervideo/Cyberlink decoder names GB-PVR will check for are:

Sonic Cinemaster® VideoDecoder 4.2,InterVideo Video Decoder,NVIDIA Video Decoder,CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD7),CyberLink Video/SP Decode (PDVD7.x),CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD7 UPnP),CyberLink DTV Video Decoder,CyberLink Video/SP Decoder,Sonic Cinemaster® DS Video Decoder.

The decoders on your machine must be called something else. If you lookup their names in GraphEdit, you can add them to the <SupportedDVDDecoders> setting in config.xml.
