HD video capture from STB

Hi all,

Still trying to figure out how to do this. Right now I have an HVR-1600 and I can record ATSC channels. I am thinking about going to digital cable, which means I have to have an HD STB from the cable company (Cox). With an STB my 1600 will be pretty much useless. The only outputs on the STB that are enabled are component and dvi. What kind of video capture card will work with component or dvi out from the STB, and will work with GBPVR? I know this seems like a really basic question but I really can't find a workable solution. Even if I have to build a whole new PC to do it I will, I just want something that will work for this!

Is there isnt any regular consumer devices that can capture HD from a set top box. Your HVR1600 should be able to tune in any unencrypted digital cable channels though.

You'd probably be better off ordering a Black Magic Intensity Pro. They supposedly have a DirectShow Capture filter. My wife would kill me if I spent $350 just to see though.

Price was the main reason I was careful to say "no regular consumer devices" above. Sure, some devices exist that have the technical capabilities, but they're expensive and dont work with mainstream software.

I do get the feeling we'll see some more practical devices for this job in the future though.

Your HVR1600 should be able to tune in any unencrypted digital cable channels though.

The confusing thing about this is just because you subscribe to a service, doesn't mean that it is unecrypted. From my STB I can get 100's of channels, in clear QAM I can only get 3 and they are aren't very interesting channels..

True, some people could incorrectly assume that anything they subscribe to is unencrypted.

The Cox STB's that I have (Scientific Atlanta 3250HD) also have svideo outputs. I feed one of them into a 150 card with good results. They down-convert the HD to SD on the svideo output. You sure it's not enabled?

Also, I believe some people have been able to record HD from an STB via a firewire connection but I don't know any details.

An affordable component or DVI/HDMI capture card would be way cool...

I would try the s-video route - I used to get 480P out of my motorola box and recorded with good quality on s-video.

Also you should try firewire see if this driver supports it:

You will have the same issue with QAM and encrypted channels, although firewire may have more clear channels,

Firewire is more reliable than my QAM capture using the 1600, although I have a moto box
