Sorry if this is obvious/dumb but I cant find an answer. How do I playback x264 mp3 .mkv files in gb-pvr? I cant play them in PowerDVD either with I guess is probably a more important question. How can you play these?! I assume I dont need the CoreAVC codec as PDVD supports x264? The file is almost certainly a recording from the BBCHD channel (which I can watch and play back my recorded .ts files) but I just get a black screen with this .mkv file.

I couldnt get mkv files to play in powerdvd but I can get them to play in gbpvr. Install the k-lite codec pack.

GBPVR just uses the default windows playback configuration, so if you don't have an x264 decoder installed...

Does PowerDVD not support x264? Or is h264 something completely different?

x246 is the open source implementation of h264: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X264

I've had a lot of success with CoreAVC (for decoding the video) and Matroska (for opening the mkv container).

Just to confirm, PowerDVD plays (and HW accels) h264 fine (therefore so does GBPVR). But I need to install another codec (e.g. CoreAVC) to play x264 mkv files - which I assume wont have any HW acceleration? I've got a copy of the codec (already have Matroska installed) so will give a go this evening. I just hope the CoreAVC codec wont screw up the HW Accel playing of h264 files!

mkv is just a container, like avi, what's inside it could be any of a lot of diffirent codecs (both audio and video). So it would there'll probably be hardware acceleration for some codecs inside mkv files, but not all.

I find that CoreAVC use the least resources on my system, it's actually performing better than VLC when playing something like 1080p x264 files.

I am using CoreAVC to display .MKV videos in GBPvr, but there is no sound. What is the best audio codec to use for these files?

Is the audio stream in AAC format?
If so, then an AAC decoder (like coreAAC)

Also you can set the perferred H264 audio decoder in the config.xml (not sure that I have seen it in the config app though)
