When I try and play some MP3 files pvrx2 bombs out with a "do you want to send MS an error report" dialog.
Other MP3 files created at the same time by the same method work fine.
The files that don't work in pvrx2 will play in WMP, winamp etc. They were all generated by the LAME v3.96 plugin for audacity, as a batch of MP3 created from one split wave file.

Does pvrx2 do its own MP3 decoding? Why do these odd files fail? How can I fix it?

Cheers

Keith

In config.xml you can change this setting:

Code:
<UseWindowsMediaPlayerForAudio>true</UseWindowsMediaPlayerForAudio>

I guess it's set to false in your setup. Use notepad or another simple text-editor to open config .xml. Make a backup firstSmile.

Update - the same MP3 files (that is the actual same file stored on the server PC) work when played on a client but crash PVRX2 when played on the server.

I'd download GraphEdit (see google). Run it. Select the 'render media file' menu option, then select your MP3 file. When you do this, post a screenshot. Also try hitting the Play button in graphedit to see if it plays successfully.

Ok - I have a screen shot of the graph for one that plays and one that does not play - they look the same to me. The one that doesn't play is the one that fails in PVRX2 and also does not play in graphEdit but the other one does play.

On the client PC the audio render is different, all files play on that.

Ok, at least we know its not a GB-PVR problem Big Grin

Its most likely related to some slightly different encoding option used on that file, and either the version of the splitter or audio decoder being used on that machine is unable to cope with that specific option.

You can either try using different encoding app so that you dont end up with these unplayable files, or try installing different splitter/decoder filters and hope you find a combination that can cope with these files.

Sorry - I know you were probably hoping for an easier fix...

Re-encoding these is no longer possible as I don't have my originals - these were created using Audacidy from captured analog and then converted to MP3 with the Lame plugin. They were all created at the same time.

This is probably a daft question but how do I install a different filter?

Easy fixes - they are a rare thing !! Thanks for your help.

At least I'm progressing with the MPC - I've fixed the BSOD Smile

There is no hard and fast rules for this stuff. It'd be pretty much trial and error stuff. For example, you could try uninstalling the intervideo audio decoder to see some other decoder already on your machine takes up the task and does it better etc...
