With the recent introduction of HD terrestrial in New Zealand I decided to build a HTPC. Been banging away on this for about a week now and no success in even see a program on the screen yet.

It seems according to the logs when I "map digital channels..." as it does the scan it detects something around channel 17 and when it tries to show this channel , that is when it hangs. (and other times it just hangs when initting).

It looks like my system doesn't support whatever VMR9 is ? (I'm a newbie to this if you haven't already guessed).

Any ideas of what I should install or tools I could use to identify what codecs/encoders I might be missing?

Windows XP SP2
HVR 4000
Sapphire HD2600XT
Phenom 9500 2.21 G with 2M RAM

Are trying to run it locally on the PC, or via remote desktop? The latter isnt compatible with VMR9.

What H.264 video decoders do you have listed in the playback tab of the config app?

Locally on the PC.
The H.264 decoder is "System Default". And that was the only option.

Start the app to reproduce this message about not supporting VMR9, then zip and attach the pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx2.exe-native.log and I'll take a look.

This is a pretty good indication that you dont have a compatible H.264 decoder installed. You need one of these to view our Freeview|HD channels. Most people get them by installing apps like PowerDVD8 etc. A newly identified way to avoid paying for a decoder was identified here: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=34684

thanks for that.
I tried those downloads and indeed received a Cyberlink H.264/AVC decoder.
So I set the H.264 Playback to this.

Now it cannot get passed the "INITIALIZING".
Sometimes it comes with an Exception message.. Other times it just hangs.

I just did it again, and this time it got through the INITIALISING phase and goto SCANNING 17 of 57 again and hung.
Here scan57.zip is the logs from that particular attempt.

Hope this helps discover what other driver I might be missing..

Can you try running PVRX2, then post the PVRX2.exe.log and PVRX2.exe-native.log?

On the screen where you selected your device type, what region and transmitter did you select? I use "New Zealand"/"Wellington (Mt KauKau)".

I set PVRX2 to Overlay. The screen and a transparent window was formed.
Log attached (overlay.7)

Then I tried VRM9 Full and got an exception.
"The instruction at 0x74754ac2 referenced memory at 0x5e38009c. The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program.

Then I tried VRM9 custom and got the same as above.

Then I tried EVR. And got a message "Sorry this system does not support the required VMR9 video render.

I have tried "New Zealand/Auckland" and "everything".
The "New Zealand/Auckland" makes it go wrong in the same way but a lot quicker.
