I've been getting poor HD playback (actually poor playback on anything from my QAM tuner). In the config I cannot choose what decoder h.264 files are run with. Is there a way to register the decoder I want to use? I have the Purevideo decoder which as I understand works pretty well with ATI cards as well as nVidia ones, and I know that the HD4850 is more card than is needed for quality hardware based HD decoding, I just don't know how to force the hardware to decode the channel stream.

When I play an HD file, the Purevideo decoder panel tells me that I'm using software decoders and my processor is pegged at 100% the whole time.

afaik, the purevideo only does mpeg2...no .264...
there's a section in config to set .264 codec, if a known codec doesn't show there, you have to add it to config yourself in 'supported' codecs..

try ffdshow for h.264....or coreavc...or even mpc codecs..[now really good w/dxva]

also, ati avivo should be able to do h.264 w/hardware accell too...
[add 'ATI MPEG Video Decoder' to supported decoders for 264 and mpeg2 in config]

QAM is MPEG2, so you dont need to worry about H.264 decoders.

Its apparently pretty common that the newest ATI cards wont do hardware acceleration of HD MPEG2 playback. Do a search for this on the avsforums, where this sort of stuff is discussed all the time (driver bugs, extra registry settings required etc).

seriously? then how do i get only 17% cpu on a 1.6ghz? i assumed the actual 'decoding' was done in software, but the deinterlacing,[90% of the work] is done by the hardware so almost as good as full hardware accell...

plus i do get decoding too when using dxva-checker with some codecs..
[shows hardware decode and hardware deinterlace active]

Yeah, it's SUPPOSED to do HD MPEG2, but it doesn't for me either. I have a Vista box with a 780g motherboard with integrated ATI HD3200 and H.264 works great, but no HA for MPEG2. However, other ATI's may work but I know mine doesn't and I haven't bothered to figure it either.
