Pentium G620
Windows 7 Premium.
Hauppague HDPVR 1212

NPVR works fine except no AC3 sound.

Tried:
AC3Filter
Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio decoder
Hauppague AC3 Decoder
LAV
FFdshow.

No sound from live TV or recorded. No sound with external player just a little occasional static.

Same setup on my second PC with same HDPVR works with fine.

Moved .ts file to second PC. Still no sound.

Can view and record TV with Hauppague Capture Progam.

Reinstalled NPVR. Still no sound.

Logs attached.

Any Suggestions??

Thanks,
James Murdoch

Your logs show you recording from RCA. You might need to right click the HDPVR channel list to change the source if you are using optical.

Hi Martin,

Using RCA on both my machines. If I simply move the USB connection to the second machine it works.

But I am pretty sure can't get AC3 audio through RCA, AAC only so the problem is not what you are describing. Something is configured differently on your other PC.

Hi Martin,

As I said earlier my setup is identical on a second machine where AC3 works on RCA. On this machine I used RCA it to record TV with AC3 sound with NPVR and with Windows Media center. AC3 is the native audio output format of the Hauppague HDPVR 1212 for both SPDIF and RCA

Hopefully we can zero in on the cause of this puzzeling behaviorl behavior.

Actually, that'd the entire story. There is some driver setting that dictates whether it produces AC3 or AAC. My guess is one of your machines is configured to produce AAC.

I don't know if there is other ways to set it, but I remember years ago some people needed to run the TME software (that came with the original HDPVR), and set that to AC3, and from then on the device would keep encoding AC3.

Sorry James you are right I was confusing DD with 5.1. For 2 channel encoding the TME software has an option to change this in Format Settings.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the followup. Please excuse my ignorance, But what is TME software. Is this something like Graph Studio?

What confuses me is the Hauppague HDPVR has HARDWARE encoders for H264 video and AC3 that is it according to their documentation.

Also since my last post I have reinstalled Windows Media Center and it records perfectly on this machine. I shall check the file formats.

Thanks for your input,

James

It's the "ArcSoft TotalMedia Extreme" software that shipped with the original HDPVR.

It also has AAC encoder hardware. Your problem is that the driver on this machine is set to use the AAC encoder rather than the AC3 encoder.

As suggested I installed TME and viewed live TV stream from the HD PVR. It reported the input stream as AC3 not AAC. See attached image "TME.jpg"

I also recorded live TV using Windows Media Center. The recorded file format is AC3 not AAC. see Attached file image "Windows Media Center.jpg"

It seems to me the HD PVR output is definitely AC3.
