Hoping for a pointer in the right direction (where is the problem..) .. have a repeatable error, when I tune into a station using the HDHomeRun, it always works the first time, but from then on any channel change will show a "No Signal Detected, Quality 0 Strength 0" box. Restarting GB-PVR will allow me to watch again (once). The other two tuners always work fine.
The steps in detail to repeat:
Open GBPPVR, open TV Guide
Double Click on a show that requires the HDHomeRun Tuner
Show shows up fine
right click to close the show and return to TV Guide
Double click on the same show (or any other show that runs on the HDHR)
Show doesn't show up, "No Signal Detected" window.
Exit GBPVR and restart
Open GBPPVR, open TV Guide
Double Click on a show that requires the HDHomeRun Tuner
Show shows up fine again (once).

I was watching The Supersizers Eat The Eighties on Live TV.
At 22:20 I started to record the show in order to continue watching in a few minutes time - really I should have just hit pause but there you go....
at 21:29 I think I just played back the recording and when finished I deleted it from the recordings list.
A few minutes later the recording appeared in the list again. humm, that;s a little odd, deleted it again and it re-appeared. So I went to bed.
Earlier today gbpvrtray showed that it was recording something "odd" which I think was still live tv. I found that the file R:\temp\Springwatch Close Encounters_4_20090615_20002100.mpg was 80GB so I shut down recording service, restarted it and deleted the file.
In pvrx2 log it shows

Just thought I'd post some success I had, even though many may already have known this. With the HD transition and file sizes swelling, especially for movies, I'd been trying transcoding MPEG-2 format .ts files into H.264 encoded MP4 files.
Handbrake was working ok on 30 minute shows, but the output was unreadable for longer shows/movies. I didn't know there was a 4GB file size limit on MP4 files since I'd never hit it ripping DVD's. Once I checked the "Large File Size" box in Handbrake, the resulting files were readable by VLC player and GB-PVR. I guess this box creates a 64-bit encoded file, rather that 32-bit, so the size limit is removed at the expense of compatibility with iPods, etc.
I know you can set up GB-PVR to auto transcode everything to save disk space, but I prefer to selectively transcode anything I plan on keeping long term, rather than wasting CPU cycles transcoding something I'm going to watch once and delete. (Takes about 2x real time to do the transcode on my Core 2 Quad@3.6GHz, and would likely take ~8x real time on my Core Duo based media PC@2.3GHz that I run GBPVR on)
Here are my final Handbrake settings:
File Format - mp4
Encoding - H.264 (Large File Size)
Bitrate - 7000kb/s (results in 50% smaller file than original for both 720p and 1080i recordings)
Audio - AAC, Dolby PL II
I know it is a non-supported device that in previous versions of gbpvr didn't work very well, but it works quite well with the current version except for this annoying quirk.
The first time a recording, or live TV (the logs are live TV) is made (probably after coming out of hibernate - I don't do standby anymore) often brings up the no signal/quality box. If I close that record window and go back to the channel (via tv guide) it works fine.
Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome - there doesn't seem to be any updated drivers for the device that I can see.

I found a cool looking piece of hardware, it is an IR receiver with many features like
- Power on/off via remote
- hardware decoding of ir signal
- Display driver working even when PC is off
- I2C Bus
- I/O Expansion ports
Unfortunatelly the project is only in german, but I think its worth to have a look. If I would have more time (less girlfriend ;o)) I would love to try it with GBPVR.

I've been playing with LIRC for the PCH/NMT. For those of you who don't know, lirc is the Linux Infrared Remote Control software that is used by lots of linux applications to interface with many supported remote controls.
The PCH has a vastly cut down implementation of lirc built in and Martin Vallevand has successfully amended it to support an additional (Hauppauge) remote. Unfortunately because of the stripped out version of lirc supplied for the NMT, this can only be done by coding and recompiling for every new remote.
I thought it would be nice if any of the long list of supported remotes could be added as they are in 'proper' lirc by adding editable config files into the home directory. That would also allow us to tweak what buttons do what to suit are own preferences. I downloaded the current CVS of lirc and set to work.....
After some time - and not a little rummaging through long forgotten programming skills (or lack of them), I have managed to get to the point that CVS lirc compiles and runs on the NMT. However (I much prefer that word to but), I have now reached a point where I want to integrate into the Gaya and mvpmcx2 applications. Unfortunately, neither app is currently designed to handle the output from the CVS implementation; they use a far simpler, but less configurable method.
CVS lirc work like this...
The signal from IR receiver is decoded by the lirc hardware code based on rules found in /etc/lircd.conf. The details of what key has been pressed on what remote and for how long are then passed to a linux socket in a long human readable string. The user application (irexec, mplayer, mythtv etc) then reads the string from the socket and decides what to do with it using the standard lirc libraries and the contents of the ~/.lircrc file.
The NMT lirc reduces this to...
The signal from IR receiver is decoded by the (fixed) lirc hardware code. That is interpreted by hard coded rules and the output is placed on a linux socket as a short hexadecimal code. That is then used by the application (Gaya or mvpmcx2) with no reference to a .lircrc file.
I can see some merit in having standard CVS lirc on the NMT. It will certainly make it easier to port any apps that use lirc. I am specifically interested in mvpmcx2 here though. To make it work properly, Martin Vallevand would have to rewrite part of the application to include the lirc_client libraries. I don't know how he feels about that, but even if he did, gaya would still not work and I can't see it getting amended in the near future.
To avoid that, I can deviate from the CVS and build a translation into the hardware decoder that still uses part of the .lircrc file to decide its translations, but outputs the hex code directly. That will work for gaya and mvpmcx2, but will make it non portable to other apps.
The alternative is that I write a buffer program that reads the human readable data and translates it using .lircrc and then dumps it onto the socket again for mvpmcx2 and gaya to collect. The down side to that is complication and another daemon running on the poor little NMT's cpu.
I am putting this long and rambling text up here to see if anyone is remotely :eek: interested in me pursuing this further. My wife already thinks I've left her!
