dvb-s card in nz using sky sat dish

Hi all, long time user, seldom poster (you'll know me from the gbpvr splash screen!)

Looking at getting freeview, have a sky dish. Have looked around at available cards, read the forums here, but im still a bit iffy as to what i need exactly.

I was looking at the hauppauge hvr-1300 or the 3000, i think it was. Unfortunately i dont have the cash to make a mistake with this, and ive been living entirely without tv for all of this year, so it would be nice to make use of it! we have zero reception for tv here, but obviously everyone has sky dishes around here.

the lnb(?) thing is whats getting me, i think that freeview and sky use the opposite?

Basically im asking for a push in the right direction and for someone to make sure im not arsing up who and buying the wrong card from someone who has done the freeview nz thing - i know i need dvb-s obviously, but after that im not 100% sure.

I also gather that gbpvr cant record one channel and watch another with dvb-s cards, i think that mediaportal does? this is a pretty big one for me unfortunatly as i cant afford 2 cards

The 1300 is DVB-T, so I'm sure you'll be talking the HVR3000.

They use the opposite polarity, but thats only a problem if you need to use them both at the same time. If this is an old Sky dish that is no longer used, then this wont be a problem.

This card should be fine, though you wont be able to use the DVB-T or analog feature it offers. (no DVB-T in NZ yet, and analog lacks the required hardware MPEG2 encoder)

No, I'm affraid not. One tuner can only be used for one thing at a time in GB-PVR. If you need to record one thing and watch something else, you'd need two cards or a dual tuner card.

DVB-T will be out in nz in the future i hear, this card will support it then? Sorry to ask so many questions, id just rather get the right answers now than do research which may end up wrong since this is 'unexplored territory' for most

I dont have first hand experience with this card, but it should be fine. I've used it's close relative the HVR4000, and that was pretty decent with Freeview. (though wouldnt recommend the 4000, since the extra features are no use here in NZ)

No, its unlikely I'll ever implement this. It comes with too many limitation and isnt worth the hassle in my book. For example, with Freeview if you were recording TV1 or TV2, you couldnt watch TV3 or C4 since these are on a different mux.

excellent, thanks for the help. Will order the card - yes, those limitations are rather harsh, would definitely be better to have a second card. I take it theres no card available that will do dvb-s and analog with the required mpeg encoder?

Unfortunately I dont think so. There are more options with DVB-T + analog, but no DVB-T here until next year.
