I agree that disk "sleeping" is a likely cause. I had an issue with DVD playback in GBPVR where there was a distortion/glitch at a repeatable time. Turned out I had the disk set to shutdown at 10 mins, and the DVD playback activity was not enough to keep it awake. Recording playback was no problem however, as the disk never shutdown. After disabling the disk shutdown, the problem was gone. If such a feature is "built-in" to these Green drives, that may be it.

Thanks for the advice. I copied the file to another drive, and no pauses for the whole hour... so that seems to point to the Seagate green drive. I subsequently upgraded Windows 7 to SP1, and so far after 1/2 hour of playing the file from the Seagate green drive, no unexpected pauses. So far so good.

Just a quick update. Since the upgrade to Windows 7 SP1 I've no longer encountered any pausing/freezing issues. The upgrade to SP1 also seemed to include the fix which resolved the issue with the PC sometimes giving me a BSOD when resuming from standby. This was probably due to the issue with Windows 7 not giving large drives enough time to get ready.... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977178/en-us.
