ffdshow decodes everything that matters, audio AND video.

In order for your video card to decode video, everything needs to be built to make that happen. So the OS, drivers, card, codec, and player all need to know what is going on. Last I heard, nothing knew how to decode x264 mkv with modern video cards.

CoreAVC and ffdshow are both software decoders and will NOT use your video card.

If you have codec problems, just uninstall everything codec-related and install CCCP. It is very fool-proof and takes care of everything for you. If you still can't decode x264 quickly enough, uncheck x264 in the cccp settings and install coreavc.

x264 is a h.264 video encoder.

Sorry if I'm being thick, but x264 is a derivative of h264? The Cyberlink codecs support H264 but dont play my x264 mkv files. That's likely to be because they break some h264 rules? (I've installed the splitter and get sound but a blank screen) So I can install CoreAVC and it'll play these files, but being an h264 codec if I set it to be the default the system will never use the cyberlink one for genuine h264 files... Thus I dont get HW Acel on any real h264 stuff which is bad...

Is there a way to use the CoreAVC codec on these x264 files only and the Cyberlink one on other h264 stuff?

x264 is an implementation of h.264. So bluray disks are encoded with an implementation of h.264 too, I just don't know the name of it.

I don't know what your problem is, but if I were you I wouldn't even be fighting with it. Path of least resistance yo, coreavc is fine.

My problem is that AFAIK CoreAVC doesn't do any HW Accel and I dont think my machine is powerful enough to cope with software HD playback (it's a 2.53Ghz Celeron D). Cyberlink HW Accels the only HD channel I have fine (and the .mov HD trailers I've downloaded) but wont play these x264 files. CoreAVC will play them but I assume will rely solely on the CPU.

You might ask why I even want to try and playback the x264 files I have if I dont think the machine will cope... it's a good question. A HW Accel solution for these files would be nice but it seems that's not going to happen.
