I managed to sort it out last night: using VMR7 instead of VMR9 Custom (static scrambled image, similar to above) or standard VMR9 (GBPVR menu image) seems to do the trick.

This most likely means something was going wrong with Direct3D support on your graphics card.

Interesting. It's so long since I last updated the ATI drivers that I can't remember exactly what I did.

I appear to be using the Omega Catalyst driver; IIRC that was mainly so I could tweak the TV-out settings to make the display look a little better.

I might investigate further when I've got more free time, but for now I'm just happy with it working.
