I've ripped several dozen DVDs from my DVD collection onto my 500GB hard drive for more convenient playback through the GB-PVR Video Library. When I turn on subtitles on any of them, the playback becomes jerky.

What can I do to improve the performance?

What video renderer and decoder are you using? Does Overlay work any better?

Video Renderer: VMR9

Video Decoder: System Default

I haven't tried the Overlay Manager, but will give that a shot.

How do I tell what the "System Default" video decoder is? The only other option is "Nero Video Decoder".

I'll experiment a bit and see if any other combination of options works better.

Its best to explicitly select the decoder, rather than relying on a random one directshow chooses.

Its probably the Nero one, but you can double check by reproducing the problem, then looking at the filter list in the gbpvr.exe-native.log.

I dont have first hand experience with the nero decoder, but from what I've read its a bit flakey. Most people use the Cyberlink or Nvidia decoders for DVD playback.

I switched to the Cyberlink Video Decoder, and it does the same thing.

I tested all of the Video Renderer options, and they're all worse:

With VMR9, the video is jerky.
With Overlay, I just get a black screen when I try to play a DVD.
With VMR7, I lose all control. I can't FF, or navigate DVD menus.
With VMR9 Custom, GBPVR totally locks up.
With VMR9 Fullscreen Exclusive, I get a black screen when I try to play a DVD.

Nothing springs to mind, but zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

I've got a large collection of DVDs ripped to the hard drive. Playback of these works well for me.

Normal playback works fine. It's just when I turn on subtitles (and when they're actually displayed) that it's jerky. It took me a while to figure that out.

I've looked through the logs and didn't see anything that jumped out to me. I'll send some over, though.

Just wanted to add that I experience the same condition (jerky video w/ subtitles) as Michael on my Dell SC430. In my case this is not a GBPVR issue because the problem occurs in Windows Media Player as well. I gave up trying to figure it out I know this is not much help to you in correcting your issue but just wanted to add my 2cents Tongue
