In my experience this is fairly common. The PCH has to guess where in the stream a particular time code is when you seek, but it often gets it wrong.

Could you please elaborate? This is a very irritating problem (and causes bad WAF effects ). What can we do to minimize it? Is it due to bad mpeg2 muxing from the recording or is it solely a problem with PCH? In that case why is it not happening with DVD video (which is also mpeg2)?

I'm not sure what more you want me to say. In my experience the PCH is pretty crappy at accurately skipping to another part of the video. I'm pretty sure only Syabas will be able to improve this - but you could try the different muxes, one of them might produce a timeline that the PCH is happier with, but in general its pretty crappy at skipping. It doesnt seem to cope well with the variability inherent in digital tv broadcasts.

Summary: The fault is mainly in PCH skip handling, although changing mux may improve.

I have changed to the Cyberlink version 3306 mux now, and my wife has tried a few recordings. It seems to work better, but I'll have to test more to be sure. Especially on very long recordings.

Yep, I have seen this a lot with live TV on the PCH. We have stopped watching live TV, and just do a quick record, wait a minute then play the recording. I'll try it tomorrow and see if I can get the logs.

Just had this happen watching the Olympics. Started watching at 20:52:25, and after a couple of minutes it skipped back to where I started watching. I kept watching and it did not skip back again - which is unusual, as normally it gets stuck in a loop. I have attached logs - hopefully the right ones.

For me if live tv gets stuck in a loop when it starts that is because the NMT player doesn't get 1.5-2Mb of data fast enough.

Just to clarify. The problems I have is with skipping within a recorded file. Live TV I rarely watch, and those times I have I haven't had any problems of that kind. I have a gigabit LAN and fast computers so feeding data to the NMT should be no concern.

Was there any resolution to the restarting issue? I have seen the same thing with live tv and netradio. It seems that if something happens to the stream (like I do something intensive on the server), live tv or netradio just skips back to where it was when I started.

I'm watching ATSC in the US with the TS MUX.

As I said a couple of posts ago looping is the sign that the player doesn't get enough data to fill the player's input buffer in the time required, video or audio. For Net Radio it is generally but not always a busy site or a low bit rate (which requires that much more data).
