You have the amp part correct. I do have one ($100) and Cox took the outside amp off as they said their signal was good enough. So, I have my ATI cable card tuners (2) amped and my QAM tuners amped and my modem and 1 analog tuner not amped. I'll try again going directly from the wall to the HDHR as well as the 2250 & 1600 to see if that helps but I'm almost 100% positive that I've already tried that......at least with the 2250 & 1600. Quite possible since the HDHR seems to be excellent quality, that an amp is not needed though many on that forum say they use one.
