This issue has been beaten to death in the past, I know. I have applied all the tips and tricks I could find here. The bottom line for me is that things work great under GBPVR but not under the newest PVRX2. I assume it's related to the VMR9 rendering as it's the only difference I can see between my two setups. Is anybody else seeing the same?

Yup. Although for me the stuttering only shows up when playing really hardcore HD (ATSC 1080i) material. SD and 720p HD are OK.

I haven't decided what to tweak yet. Last time I had to deal with this I ended up buying a new vidcard (7900GS).

yip
vmr custom just sucks as compared to the old 99.12
its the direct3d crap i would say the drivers that are provided arnt up to the task (i know nothing though) bring back overlay or at least just vmr9
i know we cant have nice looking menus
but i guess its like everything these days (vista perfect example)they lose the focus of what the main use is

what video card are you using
im beginning to think its nvidia problem more than ati

Try running PVRX2 with the -FSE command line switch. I am running at P3 1GHz with an ATI 9500, and Live SD TV works flawlessly, so you guys with the 2GHz+ CPUs should be getting better results than I am.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the -FSE option didn't work for me. Still tweaking...

What hardware setup are you using? Like I said, I have a P3 1GHz, 512mb ram, an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, a Soundblaster Live!, and an Emuzed Maui-I, and I get near flawless SD rendering with this setup, and using the -FSE switch. If I just run PVRX2 in default, which is VMR Custom, it stutters a little, but still overall watchable.

Could I recommend a house cleaning for your codecs? A lot of times the problems are the codecs that are installed. When I built my machine, I build it solely for GBPVR, so have nothing running on it that wasn't 100% needed to run GBPVR. I only have the NVIDIA Purevideo, and Cyberlink Power DVD 6.5 for MPEG, and FFDShow and Halli Spliter installed for codecs. Also, in your config, make sure you do NOT have FFDShow post processing turned on, as you need bucket loads of CPU power for this to work well.

Hope something in there helps.

-FSE doesn't work any better for me, either. That option also prevented display from my ATSC tuner, no idea why. I only tried it once.

In my case, no stuttering is good. Rest assured that my codecs are stripped down to the one and only I want: nVidia PureVideo. I even hand-edited priorities with GSpot to ensure that PureVideo comes up by default.

Frankly PVRX2 works better in a lot of ways, but in my case video quality is still better with GBPVR.

At least when played outside either GUI (WMP) all stuttering ceases, but it is nowhere near as handy.

Chippy, that's a good suggestion. I have tried so many codecs that I am not sure what I have here anymore.

When I fire by GBPVR the quality and speed are awesome... Under VMR9 and PVRX2 I get terrible performance. I have switched over to FFDShow and can see on the status that it is hitting the CPU pretty hard (up to 85%).

I am using a 1.4 Ghz AMD with a SiS Mirage 671 chip set for video.

I do believe that your integrated video are too weak to run 3D rendering for VMR9 as it most share system memory with video. That could explain some part of your problem. You could solve this by adding a dedicated video card to your PCI express port which should have its own memory. For PVR use video card doesn't need to cost that much (aka be high end) if you only want to offload your system memory and have a little better video processing for HD resolution.

I did go to SIS web site and you must have SiS761GXSiS761GX chipset with Integrated Mirage™ 1 Graphics Chipset for AMD Athlon™ 64 processors according to site or a SiS671 chipset which is Core 2 Duo/Pentium® D/Pentium® 4 series based chipset with a Mirage™ 3 Graphics Chipset. It looks like you have mixed up your what type of chipset you have onboard your MB.
_______
Some more reading about Mirage 1 VPU showed that it is DirectX 7.0 based which means that it can not use VMR9 based hardware feature to render video. For VMR9 to work it need to be DirectX 9.0 based video processer unit (VPU).
______

The place to look are your harddisk as it can also be another limit for good performance you get when you start to save larger file or do encoding/transcoding task. Defragmenting your harddisk would help to speed things up and keep files from being more and more spread around as your record or transcode. MPEG2 can create large file at the higher scale of bitrate, so it is really necessary to keep an eye on fragmentation of your harddisk.

I would recommend to take a look at Haali renderer (work best in combo with Haali splitter) as it make use of SM 2.0 hardware and not overlay as VMR9. I don't think you can use it in GBPVR which must have some kind of VMR9 support, but for other directshow based front-end/player it is possible to use.

Haali renderer is developed by the same person that made VMR9, but make use of different rendering technologies. Mediaplayer classic (MPC) work very well in this combo. There is also VideoLan (VLC) which is used here for streaming (EWA) in GBPVR (can also be used for more advanced encoding/transcoding) and then we have different version of mplayer as player and MEncoder to encoding/transcoding which is used for stattik Automation script. Mplayer/MEncoder can be downloaded into one folder and they do not need to install codec into any windows folder like directshow based player need. FFDshow solve the need to remember all kind of codec for directshow based player and give access/control of which codec that are to be used, it offer also postprocessing which can be tweaked/scaled after hardware configuration. There are plenty good guide for FFDshow out on internet.

So there is plenty of option, if GBPVR/PVRX2 aren't up to the task after recording are processed and done and it will not play nice with playing what you have recorded. Web interface can be a better option to control what you record and then use one of the other player to output it to display, if PVRX2 are too demanding.

I have to agree with blizard, suspecting your SiS Mirage 671 for video is not up to par for Direct3D/VMR9.
