Hi all
i've been trying to shift recordings I want to keep off my hard drive by using BurnDVDX2. I've gone through 3 blank dvds so far as it keeps erroring out. I've tried imgburn and nero but without success - here's an extract from the last failed attempt with nero:
Quote:[17:02:23] NeroVision 16:52:13 #26 CDR -1135 File Writer.cpp, Line 303
[17:02:23] NeroVision Write error
[17:02:23] NeroVision G: DVDRW IDE H16X
[17:02:23] NeroVision
[17:02:23] NeroVision 17:02:19 #27 Text 0 File DVDR.cpp, Line 3783
[17:02:23] NeroVision EndDAO: Last written address was 1192063 (12307Fh)
[17:02:23] NeroVision
[17:02:23] NeroVision 17:02:19 #28 Phase 38 File APIProgress.cpp, Line 285
[17:02:23] NeroVision Burn process failed at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
What I don't know how to determine is whether I've got a useless set of blank dvds or my writer is playing up or whether it's something completely different!
Any suggestions before it becomes cheaper to buy the original programme on dvd??

Many thanks!

I don't think you are having trouble with the authoring of the DVD, just the burning. On the imgburn line it always tries to run the speed at max. Can you burn DVD's normally at 16x? I can't tell which version of nero you are using, but I only test with 6 and I had some troubles with later versions having a different command line interface.

Also, you can just create an iso and then burn it from the iso. You can also create the DVD on your hard disk and burn the files to a DVD that way as well. That way you could adjust any of the burning parameters that you want.

Let me reinforce what pastro's question implies... make sure you can actually burn at max speed. I have some 8x labelled DVDs that really don't support being burned at that speed. If I turn it down to 4x the DVDs work fine, and that with 2 different DVD burners.

Do your burn to ISO format and then experiment to find out what speed your drive and media really support. If you do end up with successful, slower-speed burns, I think I remember a place within Nero where you can configure the default speed so you can set it once and forget it. I might be imagining that though.

Thanks for the pointers. I had tried making using the plugin to make an iso file and then burn that but it failed twice in nero at 16x and 8x. Third time lucky using imgburn at 4x.
Thanks, guys

So it sounds like a option to burn at different rates besides max, would be good.

I'd like it! I'll try to burn another iso file and then burn it dvd with imgburn at the lower speed and see if I can repeat my earlier success.

To echo what wtg says I find different media can give very different performance

I'm still working on that version. I have it all configured to burn at a selectable rate, but I can't queury the drive to find out what speeds are supported. Right now it just has a pull down with all the speeds, whether they are valid or not. I'm going to look at it further but I'm going away for the weekend so it won't be done until next week.
