When I use the BDA Recording Plugin to watch clearQAM HD channels, the picture is very jerky and jumps all over the place. The Direct Recording Plugin fed from my STB looks just fine. What could be wrong here.

I'm guessing your video card is struggling. Post from other north american users in the past indicated a nvidia 6600 or higher was recommended for ATSC HD.

Other possible causes would be video decoder, or possibly signal issues. I'm guessing it'll be the Geforce 5200 though. This is a pretty old card now. It would have been find for SD, but I'm guessing its just not up to HD.

try a different MPEG-2 decoder.

wait five more minutes, hoborg will be along to suggest you try his SAF package (stickied in the Wishlist forum)

(hoborg, I kid of course. you've no doubt put a lot of work into your SAF package for no benefit to yourself. thank you)

Yeah, decoders probably won't help much. The 5200 is really underpowered for HD MPEG2.

I dunno, a long time ago on my test-rig running GB-PVR 1.2.something I had near-perfect HD on an ATI Radeon 9600pro which is of similar vintage to the FX5200. I was using PowerDVD 6 I'm pretty sure. On my 'real' GB-PVR box the long frustrating journey I took to get decent HD was made all the more maddening by how easy it had been with the old 9600pro.
I even get tolerable HD playback on a notebook with Intel i915 integrated graphics and a 1.7ghz celeron.
So I wouldn't automatically assume an FX5200 can't do HD without at least trying some other decoders and/or settings.

They were about the same vintage, but the ATI 9600 pro was definitely more capable than the 5200 when it came to HD playback. There were plenty of users that were able to get HD playback on a 9600 Pro. Nvidia users were recommending 6600+ models at the same time.

I'm not discounting decoders, and it is worth trying other decoders before buying new hardware, but I suspect it'll end up with the 5200 needing to be replaced to get decent performance out of it.

i second that, i started with a 5200 which was great for sd but completely underpowered for hd..just couldn't get the video to the display fast enough...nothing will help..

and yes, 9600 does hd easily...my 9550 did also, but they can take advantage of hw accel.
the 5200 barely has any acceleration in it..[only idct, only for mpeg2, 9600 has dxva1-mode_c which includes motion-compensation,the harder part]

I'm not sure of the differences between UK and US HD, but .....

My gbpvr server (not used for watching stuff) is a 3.2ghz P4 with an FX5200 and it stutters on HD when I give it the odd tryout. Does everything else fine though.

Also had an FX5200 and a p4 2.8GH was never able to get HD to play back without stuttering, it came close on the 720P channels but still wasnt good enough and 1080i just killed it
