I'm trying to migrate from GBPVR to NPVR, and I can't set up my HDHR tuners, which are working in GBPVR. They show as enabled, but don't yield any channels on scan. Turned off the Windows firewall just in case. Are there special settings required for these tuners like with GBPVR? All the relevant posts I've found are in the GBPVR support thread.
Will attach logs, but first thought I'd see of there is a step I need to take that I'm missing.
I was wondering if there was a way or method to allow me to adjust or change the file name of recordings.
Regardless if I use the Guide or Manual recording, the file name always follows this convention:
"ProgramName_Date_StarttimeEndTime.ts" or "Family Guy_20101204_16001630.ts"
Using utilities such as UltraXMLTV, one is able to set additional information displayed in the guide, such as Season and Episode numbers (ex. 607...season 6, episode 7), which would be handy to have if you collect a large external media collection and you want to integrate the recordings with the collection.
Is there a setting somewhere in nPVR that will adjust the output file name to include other fields?
This might only be a problem for UK users, with our silly half-and-half shared frequency channels, such as BBC Three/CBeebies and BBC Four/CBBC.
In GBPVR, if you tried to view BBC Three during the day, it would actually show CBeebies (with the OSD/EPG showing the details for BBC Three). Not ideal, but more than easy enough to live with.
NPVR is much cleverer now though, and knows not to do this. However, you get a slightly worse problem because if you change to a channel when it's not broadcasting then nothing happens. If you were channel flicking, you're left with either a frozen picture from the previous channel or a black screen. If you jumped to it from the Guide, then you just get the black screen. In both cases, no OSD appears to tell you what channel you're on.
It's particularly bad if you have a couple of these channels back to back. For example, my channels go:
- Channel 4
- Five
- BBC Three
- BBC Four
- Dave
As you go from Five to BBC Three, NPVR acts like it's hung, because the picture freezes, and no OSD appears to let you know you're on a new channel. If you're lucky, you can then channel-up to BBC Four (even though there's nothing to let you know it worked). Normal service only resumes once Dave is reached. In very rare occasions, NPVR *will* actually hang and needs to be restarted.
I'm not really sure what the solution should be. At the very least, I think the OSD needs to appear to let you know you've changed channel. Beyond that, perhaps a way for us to tell NPVR when these channels are active, so it could display a custom banner (eg "channel not broadcasting") when you switch to it.
(The only time I've noticed a visual indication of what's going on is when using Windowed mode, and you'll see, for example, BBC Three appear in the title bar.)
I've attached a log file that shows loading NPVR, going to the Guide, selecting BBC Three, then channel flicking to BBC Four, and then Dave.

I'm trying to get my remote mapped (via HIP) for controlling NPVR, but some things seem to be the reverse of how they were in GBPVR. For instance, channel changing...
In GBPVR, PageUp meant Channel+ (so you'd go from channel 1 to 2 to 3) and PageDown meant Channel- (3 to 2 to 1). You could also use those buttons to skip a page at a time in the Guide or in lists.
In NPVR, they still skip in the guide/lists as expected (in terms of direction), but they're now reversed for channel changes, ie, PageUp now moves down a channel (3 to 2 to 1), and PageDown goes up a channel (1 to 2 to 3).
To me this is wrong. Have I missed something? If not, is there any chance we can have it back the way it worked in GBPVR please?
+ and - on the numeric keypad do change channels in the direction I'd expect, but they have no effect in the guide. I'd really like to be able to map my Channel+/- buttons so that I can have both bits of functionality.
My old system crashed so I had to reinstall. So I I installed gbpvr 1.4.7 and the episode tweaker on my other box. The delete button is active but not the update button - it is totally grayed out no matter what. I removed everything and did a fresh install with a new database with the same results. It is XP with service pack 3
Is there any way to scan for channels in the 240-300 range? I've been getting local channels in the clear in HD without a problem for at least 2 years. Before I had a digital tuner, I had the cable ran straight into the TV and had local channels in HD. I did not even see the analog ones through the TV (they were there as my analog tuner seen them).
All of a sudden this week I no longer get local channels in HD. I know it's not the tuner or my PC. I connected the coax straight into the TV and I still don't get HD like I used to. I believe that they are still broadcasting the local channels in the clear in HD but have moved them up to the 240-300 range. The below listings is from their site for basic cable (no stb).

Neither my TV, gbpvr, or npvr will let me manually select these channels. I have selected every single scan option available (even "all countries") and still I cannot seem to find any HD channels in the clear.
Anyone got any ideas or advice? I watch mostly local channels and want most of my recordings to be in HD. I have a hvr-1600 and would hate to have to go from 2 tuners (for local channels) down to 1 analog.
Thanks to great help I've received from folks on this board, I have nPVR working well now, with the program guide set up and the remote working.
Now, I'd like to see if I can get a slightly better picture. I'm using ffdshow as the codec with U.S. OTA broadcasts. When there is little motion in the scene the picture is absolutely beautiful: detailed, vivid, crisp. But when something moves quickly, the edges of the moving object or person get heavily pixelated, and if the whole scene is moving (during a fast pan, for example) the image sometimes breaks up and then re-stabilizes when the image is no longer moving so much.
Another issue is that on some TV channels, I get video noise right at the top border of the active video area, basically a line of flashing junk just a few pixels wide. These seems to vary; a problem on some stations not others. More likely to be a problem on a dark background.
The other decoders (besides FFDSHOW) that show up in my installation are nanocosmos, main concept, arcsoft, and intervideo nonCSS. None of these really work.
Are there other decoders that could be better? Where do I find them? Is there anything in my configuration other than the decoder that could be causing the image degradation related to motion. I do understand a bit about MPEG and I know that when things are moving the bit rate can go up -- so perhaps the issue not with the decoder but with bottlenecks elsewhere in the set up??? My faster graphics card is on order but hasn't come yet.
